The ELK ROBE
by Steven Chorney

AFor a nomadic people, as were the Plains INdians of North America, few possession were held in as high esteem as the precious heirlooms of ceremonial clothing, perhaps several generations old and a documentation of family history. Both are proudly displayed by a young Native American woman in this contemporary painting by Steven Chorney.
AIn the tradition of passing matriarchal history, geometric symbols were carefully painted on the surface of an Elk Robe. Entries were as diverse as the individual women who added their mark to it. Anything from female tribal customs to methods of carving Buffalo might be recorded for future generations in this simple but effective manner, thus providing a valuable link to the past. Oil painting on canvas.
